About

I am Kurt Stockman, born in Ronse, Belgium in 1970, and I create photos and films. My artistic practice explores the dynamics of the contemporary landscape through abstraction. I believe that in this time of human-induced climate change, every perceivable landscape is partly formed by human activity, and thus, we humans have become the landscape.

My works establish a connection between the landscape’s reality and that which is imagined by its conceiver. Through my art, I seek to explore concrete questions that shape our relationship with the planet and other life forms on it. Drawing from the visual vocabulary of romanticism, naturalism, and symbolism, my pieces address diverse social, political, and ecological issues. My works incorporate both time and space, creating a fictional and experiential universe that gradually emerges.

I am a multidisciplinary artist who has been primarily focusing on photography since 2017. I studied cultural sciences at Ghent University, which provided me with a theoretical background that has been influential in my artistic practice.

After completing my studies, I began organizing art happenings with Starbot in Ghent. This experience sparked my interest in exploring my own artistic potential. Since then, I have delved into different forms of artistic expression, such as making music with Starbot Ensemble, Kapotski and No Echo no no. I’ve collaborated  with Topo Copy, a riso print collective, on various projects. I have also worked as a DJ, VJ, and performance artist. My music has been released on various platforms, including vinyl, cassette, and online.

Currently, I live and work in Ghent, Belgium, and Dieulefit, France, where I continue to explore and push the boundaries of my artistic practice. My work can be seen in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Bolivia, the United States, Luxembourg,…
